The Dust Bowl — Ohio Street, 1980s

Arkansas Memory Archive | JRōby

On Ohio Street in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a patch of dirt became a basketball court, and a homemade goal became the center of a neighborhood's afternoons.

There were no polished hardwood floors, painted boundaries, or grandstands. Just worn sneakers, striped socks, a battered basketball, and the dust rising beneath the feet of boys who came to play.

The Dust Bowl remembers a time when imagination transformed ordinary places into extraordinary childhood experiences. Through warm light, movement, and textured detail, JRōby preserves the laughter, competition, and community of growing up in Pine Bluff during the 1980s.

Part of the Arkansas Memory Archive, this work celebrates the beauty and significance of everyday African American life in the American South.
